Acacia ants suffer from an unseen addiction. From the outside, the plant and the ant have a symbiotic relationship: the ant guards the tree from harmful insects and plants, and the acacia provides shelter for the ants and their larvae. However, the tree releases an enzyme that alters the way ants break down sugars, and the ants are no longer able to consume sugars different from those found in the acacia sap.
